Yann Martel – Life of Pi

Picking this book up for USD$4 (at Borders near Madison Square Garden) during its closing down sale was a gem. It’s an illustrated hardcover book that was well worth its 1KG of luggage weight to bring back.

The story is about a boy called Piscine who got stranded on a boat with some animals, including a bengal tiger, for 227 days.

It is an adventure novel that touches on many issues, with the prominent one being religion. I was really fascinated by the island that he chanced upon, and also what he did to survive for so long. It’s gruesome/disgusting at some parts, but no doubt necessary.

The last part of the story also made me think a bit more of whether the narration by Piscine was indeed the truth, or was it a figment of his imagination. Which story would you buy? Are you the believer, or the skeptic that sticks to hard scientific facts and probability?

I think there is a bit more to the story than just an adventure novel. I really can’t wait for the movie to be out. It’s directed by Ang Lee, so I expect something good!
