Year 3 Semester 1

Alas, the summer holidays have ended and I begin my last lap as a final year student at Nanyang Technological University.

I predict the stressful times this semester would not be from the mugging for tests and exams, because I am only taking 11 AUs this semester. However, it’ll probably come from the numerous job applications and interviews and networking sessions and recruitment talks that I will be attending! I already attended 2 networking sessions and submitted 4 job applications in the first week of school alone…

What’s worse is that I don’t have a hall this semester, so the travelling time that I waste every day is just insane. I take 2 hours to travel to school, and probably another 1 hour 45 minutes to get home. I really hate waiting or commuting about, and this is really a test of my endurance.

Anyhow, I will also make it a point to enjoy my final year in NTU!

Savor my last chance to be a college student before the working life kicks in full time.

Birthday Celebration – Hummerstons & Gardens by the Bay

Michelle had in store a full day of celebrations for me on Sunday! We started it off with brunch at Hummerstons.

It’s located on the 2nd floor at Robertson Walk.

After I came back from Canada, I had been craving for good poutine for a long time, and when I found out that they serve them here, I couldn’t resist ordering! We had the Italian Job poutine which costs $13.90. The one I really wanted to try (Montreal Poutine) costs $19 which we felt was too expensive…

My steak with poached eggs $28. The steak was alright, the poached eggs were bland. Their truffles fries were the only redeeming item on the plate!

Michelle’s order of Breakfast Tostada $16. She didn’t really like the sausages that were too hard, and I guess the tortilla chips were kind of disappointing for us too.

Our dessert was Tarte a Roon! It looked nice, but the almond macaroon crumbled too easily and didn’t really taste good. I know of many other places with better apple desserts.

We also saw that they serve papa palheta coffee here, so we decided to give it a try too!

I don’t know why but it didn’t taste at all like the good familiar coffee that was papa palheta’s. Perhaps they used a different bean or milk or something.

As you can see, this place was not really worth the money. It came up to about $45 per pax, and we will most probably only come back here for the truffle fries, if ever.

Our next stop for the day is Gardens by the Bay!

Check out the people photo-bombing us. Including the lady on the right trying to pinch/flick the blue guy’s nipple.

The Cloudforest Dome – I really liked this place because it was a cooling 20 degrees and I wish Singapore’s weather could be like this forever.

There is this Lady Slipper Orchid flower that we kept seeing around. Doesn’t it remind you of a certain Pokemon?

Menacing Pitcher Plant.

This High Line style trail that we can follow in the Dome.

The Flower Dome has less height to its features. Most of the flora there are mediterranean or dessert types, which means plenty of cactus and other similar plants.

My attempt at a panoramic shot of the Flower Dome.

We spotted Gary the Snail from Spongebob there!

My favorite picture of the day.

Thank you so much Michelle ❤ for this wonderful day!

Love you!

Food For Thought – Diarrhea Incident

I knew something was wrong the moment all of us felt like we needed to shit whilst eating halfway. I don’t know what exactly was the culprit, but we suspect that it could be the pancakes because that was the only thing that we all shared a bit and ate.

True enough, I had the runs at about 6pm and 8pm. I didn’t even have any appetite for dinner and I was already feeling hot and feverish.

I took dhamotil and panadol and quickly went to sleep, hoping I’ll recover when I wake up the next morning.

The epic finale happened at about 1.40am, when my mom came into my room and found out that I am burning hot and having a high fever. She gave me some H20 to drink, and immediately I had the urge to vomit. I ran to the toilet and puked 3 times in total, and I was so faint and giddy after that; my vision greyed and I kind of passed out on the toilet floor.

I must have scared the shit out of my poor mom.

But I definitely felt better after the puking. I was conscious again after about a minute or so and went back to bed, and I feel normal this morning already.

Getting food poisoning really sucks, and I hope there weren’t other people at Food for Thought that had a similar or even worse experience than I did. Having said that, I am NEVER going back to the Botanical Gardens outlet again…

Afterthoughts, I am very thankful to my mom who took care of me while I was unwell. She even woke up earlier to cook 爱心 porridge breakfast before she went to work in the morning.

Sierra Batam Trip 28 – 29 July 2012

Sierra mates travelled together again, and the destination this year is Batam!

We needed a short overseas getaway and most importantly, it must be cheap. Therefore we sourced from various websites online and found this coupon from Plus! BigDeals

It includes 2-way Ferry Tickets + 2-way Land Transfer + 1 night stay in Harmoni-One + 60 Mins Indonesian Traditional Balinese Massage + Buffet Breakfast + Authentic Halal Indonesian Buffet + 1 day Batam City & Shopping Tour + RP 50,000 Shopping voucher. Basically, it costs about $100 after surcharges (fuel/departure and weekend + tour guide tip) and we each changed SGD$50 to rupiah for our communal fund.

The city tour was in our opinion pretty lame, and the agency probably gets commission from bringing us to these places. The only good thing was the 1 hour balinese massage!

We were even brought to a temple that has the largest Laughing Buddha in South East Asia, and what we did was a customary walkabout and picture taking.

Only PQ Tan spotted the anachronism. It’s also an omen for what’s to come.

Because we were thrown into a shopping mall for 2 hours with nothing to do, we headed for our surprisingly favorite past time overseas – Karaoke! This time it was so dirt cheap, at $1 per person for the entire room. We had no choice but to belt out hits such as One Directions’ – What Makes You Beautiful.

The Harmoni-One Hotel that we stayed at was pretty decent! It actually exceeded our expectations especially after hearing so many bad reviews about hotels in Batam.

This was their greek-themed rooftop pool with heated jacuzzi. It was also our lazing place for both night and day time there.

We took on the tour guide’s advice and he brought us to Wey Wey Live Seafood to have our dinner. It was really crowded that night, amongst a row of other much emptier seafood restaurants near the beach. Nevertheless, it was a good and cheap dinner. It was a tour package and costs $18 for 6 dishes and 1 soup + transport to and from the hotel.

It was a beautiful night for alfresco seafood.

There were also some parts of the trip that are best left forgotten, but some quotes shall forever be etched in our memories.

So, who’s in the middle.

There cannot be just 2 people in the hot tub at any point in  time.

That just about concludes our short trip.

Batam really isn’t as bad as what some people say, and it can actually be a much cheaper alternative to have fun over the weekend.

Still can’t beat Taiwan though.
